The Golden Rule of Social Media Growth

Have you heard of this concept before? If so, I hope glancing at this post reminds you to tighten your game. If not, here’s a quick overview so you can start incorporating this approach to your social media strategy.

Social media experts have observed that follower and engagement growth happens when content creators follow a posting strategy in specific proportions.

Here it is:

70% of your posts should be personality posts that are of value to your viewer. They should be an exposition of your unique qualities. Your music and art can be the subject of these posts, but your audience should not feel like they’re being sold to. These are GIVE posts, not ASK posts. Need ideas? Your fans would love to see your band practices, your recording sessions, your pets, your culinary creations, your nature photography, your home, your hobbies, your trips, your drugs (if that’s your scene)…

20% of your posts should be shared from different sources. Give your idols and contemporaries props! Share their posts when they have announcements to make. This is the easiest way to grow your platform. You can attract the support and attention of fans of your favorite outlets just by sharing their content. Does your ideal fan also like Tyler, The Creator? Then share your favorite posts from his page. His fans will find your page more relevant and start following you.

10% of your posts should be promotional material. Yes, only 10% of your posts should be ASK posts or contain direct Calls To Action (CTA’s.) “Check out our new video.”, “Listen to our new single.”, and “Tune in for this Friday’s Live Stream.” are all examples of ASK posts. They are necessary for building your business and you should be proud to make these CTA’s, but keep them to 10% of your total output. Otherwise, your followers will feel like they’re constantly being sold to. That’s not inspiring.

The Secret of How to Integrate the 70-20-10 Rule and Your Single Release Plan

If you’re about to release a single, then you may be confused about to adhere to the 70-20-10 rule while trying to communicate all the details about your release. Feels like you’ll be posting too much promotional material, right? The trick is to create a hybrid style of post that shares the story/journey of your single release. For example, a video of your band loading into the studio with text that says something like, “We love this studio. Have you been here yet? We’re tracking our upcoming single here today. Can’t wait to share it.”

Don’t Be Intimidated, Just Be Aware

There’s plenty of information on this subject if you’d like to do a deep dive. My goal is just to give you an overview of it because being aware of your posting ratio can mean the difference of people being bummed or stoked when you show up to the party that is their IG feed.

As always, please feel free to get in touch if you have any questions about this or any other aspect of taking your artist project from the garage to the national stage. Send me a message at james@forestparkdiy.com and ask me anything. I respond to all the emails.
